Local Government: Overcoming the Barriers to Getting Involved
Monday, June 18, 2018 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Mother Brook Arts and Community Center Library
123 High Street, Dedham, MA
Women in Democracy Dedham (WINDD) is hosting an event June 18 for people interested in increasing their civic engagement. The event is designed to foster discussion about the barriers that prevent people - particularly women - from running for local office and joining civic boards, as well as to identify ways to overcome those challenges.
Although this past April’s town election saw unprecedented numbers of women running for town-wide office in contested races, the makeup of many of Dedham’s boards is still primarily male. Yet research shows that diverse boards make better decisions than non-diverse boards.
Members of the community are invited to this open discussion. Refreshments will be served. There will be a kids’ activity table at the event.
To aid with planning purposes, please RSVP for this free event via Eventbrite: https://windd-june18.eventbrite.com
Future events will include Town Government 102 – Appointed Boards and Committees (September); Women in Government - Inspirational Stories from Local Leaders (October); Town Government 101: Town Meeting and Elected Office (November/December 2018); and Campaigns 101 (January/February 2019).
