John Barnes III graduated from Dedham High School in 1964. Barnes joined the Army after high school and after serving in the Dominican Civil War and completing a tour of duty in Vietnam, he volunteered to go back for another tour in Vietnam. During his second tour, his unit came under attack during the Battle of Dak To. He was killed when he jumped on a grenade to save the lives of his wounded comrades. For "conspicuous gallantry" that was "above and beyond the call of duty", Barnes received the Medal of Honor. The John Andrew Barnes III Armed Forces Scholarship will help preserve the heroic, selfless action of one of Dedham's finest. John Barnes made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. This scholarship will also highlight our young graduates who are choosing to answer the call to duty by serving in our armed forces.
