The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is planning a project to improve service in its system that provides drinking water to Canton, Dedham, Norwood, Stoughton, Westwood, as well as portions of Brookline, Milton, and Boston.

Five communities in the southern portion of the service area, including Dedham, are served by a single water transmission main that was installed in the 1950s. This project will provide a second water transmission main, 36" in diameter, to ensure service would not be interrupted if the older main were to fail.

The construction project (map) will be completed in three phases:

  • The first, which is ongoing, will install a water main through Stony Brook Reservation in Boston from the West Roxbury Parkway, across Washington Street, along Enneking Parkway and end at the town line on the Dedham Parkway. This work is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2018.
  • The second phase will continue on Dedham Boulevard through East Dedham Square, across Milton Street onto Walnut, Mt. Vernon, and Jefferson Streets, ending just before East Street. The contract for this phase will be awarded in the coming months.
  • The third phase will continues on Jefferson Street, crossing East Street onto Rustcraft Road, then crossing under the commuter rail at Dedham Corporate Station, under route 128 and into Westwood. The contract for this phase will be awarded by fall 2017.

According to the MWRA, all roads affected by the pipe installation will be completely paved from curb to curb at the end of each contract. Any sidewalks affected will also be reconstructed.

The MWRA held a public meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Endicott Estate. Click here to watch the video of this meeting.
