RECYCLING EVENT SET FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13

Returning this Fall, Used Bikes Collected as Vehicles for Social Change

DEDHAM, Mass., October 1, 2018 – The Dedham Sustainability Advisory Committee’s next recycling event will be held on Saturday, October 13 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Dedham Middle School, 70 Whiting Avenue. It will be held rain or shine and is free for Dedham residents, with the exception of electronics which will have a nominal cost.

You can recycle many of the items not accepted in bi-weekly curbside pickup, including scrap metal; Styrofoam products such as those stamped #6 like solid blocks or sheets of white packing foam, coolers, clean and dry polystyrene coffee cups, grocery meat trays, and takeout clam shell food packaging, but no packing peanuts (all polystyrene must be clean and dry); textiles, including clothes, linens and stuffed animals; and paper for on-site shredding.

“We’re thrilled to welcome back Bikes Not Bombs, a Jamaica Plain non-for-profit that collects bicycles to repair and ship to developing nations in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Ginny LeClair, Dedham’s Environmental Coordinator. Bikes Not Bombs creates global programs as well as those in Greater Boston to provide skill development, jobs and sustainable transportation. It charges only $10 per bike to cover shipping. “Bikes Not Bombs collected about 40 bicycles from Dedham residents in the spring, which provide sustainable transportation plus skill and job development opportunities locally and abroad.”

Again this fall we will offer mercury recycling, an element that if not disposed of properly is harmful to human health and the environment. Mercury is found in numerous household items such as older thermometers, thermostats, button-cell batteries and fluorescent lamps. There also is a permanent mercury shed located at the Dedham Transfer Station, 10 Incinerator Road, which is open to residents throughout the year.
